How do you Become a Private Detective in Georgia?

Becoming a private detective (investigator) in Georgia can be an extremely rewarding  career choice.  It’s a competitive profession, though, and there are many requirements you must meet and a few training steps you need to take to qualify for licensure. These requirements are governed by your licensing authority, the Georgia Board of Private Detectives & Security Agencies.

Establishing Your Own Private Investigator Agency in Georgia

Starting your own private detective agency in Georgia has many advantages. You will have to meet many qualifications in order to establish your own agency. We recommend you visit the Georgia Board of Private Detective and Security Agencies (GBPDSA) and download the application packages available on their website.

If you meet the requirements to qualify for a Private Detective Company license as mandated by the Board you fill out a Georgia Private Detective Agency application with the Georgia Board. Once the board reviews it they will determine if you are qualified to take the required Board examination and fulfill the insurance requirements prior to opening your agency.

The experience required is two years – either in law enforcement or as a registered private detective employed by a licensed private detective company. The education required is a four-year degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice, or a related field of study.

It is important to understand that the licensing  process may take three to six months. Before working as a private detective you must first complete the 70 Hour Pre-Licensing Class .   You will also have to study for a state exam.  Once you pass the state exam and the Board approves your application and a license has been supplied, you can go to work.

Before working as a private detective you must first complete the 70 Hour Pre-Licensing Class .

You are welcome to the take the basic training class prior to being hired by an agency. In fact, we HIGHLY recommend it. Private investigation specific education is the most important investment you can make in yourself as an up-and-coming professional.

As owners of an established and well-respected agency, Find Investigations, we get resumes all of the time; the first thing we look for before considering a candidate is, “How has this person invested in themselves before asking us to invest in them?”
