FAQ Regarding Continuing Education for Iowa Private Investigators

The following are guidelines on continuing education for private investigators in Iowa:

  • The State of Iowa Department of Public Safety is the licensing authority for private investigators in Iowa.

  • Private investigators need 12 hours of continuing education credit accrued during the current licensure period every two years.
  • You can not roll over additional CEU hours to the next renewal period.
  • Each licensee is responsible for submitting documentation of continuing education to the Iowa Department of Public Safety when they renew their license. You are responsible for giving them a copy of your certificate of completion.
  • PI Education online courses qualify for CE credit under statute 121.22(4).
