FAQ’S Regarding Continuing Education for Alabama Private Investigators
In Alabama, licensed private investigators must complete continuing education to renew their license, as regulated by the Alabama Private Investigation Board (APIB). The requirement is 16 hours every 2 years.
Regulatory Board: Alabama Private Investigation Board (APIB)
Total Requirement: 16 hours every 2 years
Credit Breakdown: 2 hours must be Ethics. Up to 8 hours may be completed via self-paced or online coursework (such as through PI Education).
Self-Paced/Asynchronous Online CE Hrs Limit: Limited to 8 of 16 hours (50%).
Notes: CE must be earned during the current two-year licensure period only. Your hours do not carry over to the next renewal period. Because up to half the requirement can be self-paced/online, licensees should plan for at least 8 hours of non-self-study, approved CE as well.
Reporting: No documentation is submitted with renewal unless the licensee is audited. Best practice is to download and keep certificates of completion on file for at least 3 years. Auditing is a regular practice for state licensing boards.
Accepted as a continuing education provider in Alabama.
Why PI Education Is Accepted: Alabama’s rule broadly accepts training from qualified individuals, firms, and institutions that provide PI-related instruction; there is no separate per-course pre-approval process.
