FAQ Regarding Continuing Education for Texas Private Investigators

Our courses are continuing education courses for private investigators and managers with a Class A & Class C license (NOT training courses for Level II- Level IV, or firearm proficiency or Alarm Installers). Per §35.162, CE obtained from PI Education may not be used to satisfy the continuing education requirements for commissioned security officers or personal protection officers. Our courses may not be used for Class B licenses – Security Contractor Company License includes one or more of the following: Alarm, Armored Car, Courier, Electronic Access, Guard, and Locksmith.

Following the statute, PI licensees with more than fifteen (15) years of continued registration as a private investigator or manager of a Class A or Class C license must complete a total of twelve (12) continuing education hours that consist of:

  • 8 hours of continuing education in investigative studies
  • 2 hours of continuing education in ethics studies
  • 2 hours of continuing education in the review of Texas Occupations Code, Chapter 1702, and the Board’s administrative Rules, Tex. Admin. Code, 37 TAC 35.

Therefore, licensees with less than fifteen (15) years of continued registration as a private investigator or manager of a Class A or Class C license must complete a total of eighteen (18) continuing education hours that consist of:

Additional CE guidelines for Texas investigators:

  • Continuing education must be completed before your renewal date (every two years).
  • You can not roll over additional CEU hours to the next renewal period.
  • You will not need to submit documentation of continuing education to the licensing board unless you are audited. It is good practice to download and keep your certificates of completion on file for three years. Auditing is a regular practice for state licensing boards.
  • Your registration number and/or license number must appear on your certificate of completion. You must also enter that information in your profile with PI Education.
  • Proof of the required continuing education must be maintained by the employer and contained in the company’s personnel file. All registrants shall indicate they have completed the required minimum hours of department-approved continuing education credits on their application for renewal.
